класс компьютерных игр со сценарием, требующим активных действий играющего по прохождению управляемым им персонажем многочисленных уровней. Названы так в честь игровых аркад, где стояли автоматы с подобными играми. Согласно П. Гродеку, аркадные игры делятся на "шутеры", сленг стрелялки (shooters), где вне зависимости от обстановки основная цель - расстрелять всё, что движется вокруг, набирая за попадания как можно больше очков; "платформеры" (platform games) - начало им в 1981 году положила игра Donkey Kong (Nintendo), где персонаж проводит время, прыгая между "платформами", собирая призы и уклоняясь от врагов; и "арканоиды" - где игрок, так или иначе, отбивает мяч ракеткой (среди них знаменитая игра Arcanoid, давшая чуть позже название этому аркадному поджанру)."At the time, all the arcade Asteroids games were done with real vector graphics" (Linus Torvalds). — В то время во всех аркадных играх вроде "Астероидов" использовалась настоящая векторная графика см. тж. computer games, FPS, RPG, TPS
